Two Lodge Pendleton Marines conspired to kill a young Oceanside entrepreneur Sunday, luring him to his car restoration purchase and stabbing him at least 14 times with knives they recently bought, a prosecutor said during their arraignment Wednesday.
First-rate Court Judge Marshall Hockett set bail at $10 million for Pfc. Xavier Akeam Adams, 19, and Open Cpl. Raphael Roshod Davis Ramey, 20, who both pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges of first-degree mangle and conspiracy.
A public defender spoke for the two Marines, who stood shackled inside a glass enclosure, wearing impenetrable blue jail uniforms.
The victim, Charles Evan Williams, 23, of Carlsbad, was stabbed in the neck and features and beaten severely, said Minaz Bhayani, the deputy district attorney handling the case.
Bhayani described the lawlessness as one of the most vicious he's worked in his 20-year career, noting the longest knife wound measured 9 inches around Williams' neck.
"What's quit from this is there was a great deal of planning," Bhayani said.
