When you are looking for a portable GPS sailing system, you want to find something that gets you where you want to go with as little pain as possible. There are tons of bells and whistles that can rummage through a price to $500+ dollars, but none of the extra features really help with the primary focus. While on the expedition to find the perfect portable GPS navigation system, I tried models from Garmin, Magellan, Navigon, Tomtom, and software options that ran on my iPhone and Palm. At the end of the day, I can safely say that the Garmin Nuvi 780 met all of my objectives, and then some, while pieces comfortably in my budget. Currently priced at $199.99 over at Amazon with free shipping, the Garmin Nuvi 780 has the features of the big dogs, but an affordable charge.
When I first turned the Garmin Nuvi 780 on, I was amazed with the speed that it aquired a GPS signal. With previous portable GPS navigation systems, I would find myself waiting 5 or 10 minutes to earn a satellite signal lock, but with the Nuvi 780, I had a solid signal in less than 30 seconds. There were a couple of features that I was exceptionally interested in, including Multi-Destination routing and the "Where's My Car?" The Multi-Destination routing spotlight works exactly as described - it allows you to input multiple destinations, select an order, and find the quickest way between them all. If you have a pretty steady routine, you can save the route for future use. The "Where's My Car?" main film was especially intriguing, as I frequently find street parking in Atlanta and can't find my car at the end of a long-evening. "Where's My Car?" records your call for location when the Nuvi 780 is removed from the mount, and helps you navigate back to your car by foot when the night is over. The only downfall of this special attraction is that you need to bring the GPS into the bar with you, but it fits in most pockets or purses, so it's worth it in my opinion.
