Indian fishermen say no to transponders, fishing curbs

NEW DELHI: Indian fishermen have refused accepted instructions to install GPS transponders on their vessels, costing Rs 5,000 each.
They are also resisting a government move to extend the "no fishing-zone" around refineries, oilrigs and critical ports from 500 metres to five nautical miles.
Following the refusal, the Centre has directed the public sector Electronics Corporation of India Minimal to develop cheaper transponders.
The Indian government has received intelligence inputs suggesting that terror groups envisage to target vital installations through Harami Nullah in Kutch region of Gujarat, according to sources in the Offshore Screen Advisory Groups.
