— Conservationists raised concerns Monday over the environmental burden of a reconstructed pioneer farmstead planned for a site off S.C. 28 near the Chattooga River.

Mike Crane, area ranger for the U.S. Forest Service, said all concerns would be weighed carefully before approving the plan but that the basic presentation fit the forest plan for the area.

Crane, Forest Service archeologist Jim Bates and Oconee Heritage Center curator Away Gambrell outlined the proposal and fielded questions at a forum at the Heritage Center designed to solicit influential opinion on the project, which was proposed by the Heritage Center board.

The plan calls for the rehabilitation of the buildings of the old Russell grange property off S.C. 28 in northern Oconee County and the reconstruction of a pioneer farmstead adjacent to the site as a living portrayal exhibition of Southern Appalachian culture and heritage.

The Forest Service bought the 187 acres of the Russell realty, bordering the Chattooga River, in 1970, Crane said, and placed the five acres that included the Russell outfit and outbuildings on the National Register of Historic Places. The Russell house, center of a working farm from the mid-19th century, also served as an inn and announce office. The house and two outbuildings burned as a result of arson in 1988. Since the burning, the Forest Services has made spot or no effort to do anything with the property, according to Crane.
